Scandanavian Flair on Germany’s Baltic Coast

For people from Hamburg to Schwerin and for millions of tourists, our future IKEA Scandinavian Centre in Lübeck-Dänischburg presents unique flair, one-of-a-kind architecture, and a diverse family-friendly shopping experience. The range of offers in the around 60 shops on 80,000 m2 floor space extends from furnishings to fashions to outdoors and sports. Even a do-it-yourself store is included.
Unique to this spot: The area is the former production plant for Villeroy & Boch, one of the European-wide leading providers of interior design, who will - together with IKEA - open the first German “House of Living.” Therefore, we are a strong magnet for many other leading brands.
The site is attractively located directly on the Trave so that the planned proprietary boat dock will offer interesting possibilities for marketing promotions and for luring tourists for a visit. Tourists are certainly a success factor. Almost 13 mio. tourists make a day trip to Lübeck every year, and over one million visitors stay over night.
The architectural concept for the Centre was inspired by the surrounding natural landscape. The buildings between IKEA and the Trave are arranged like the stones on a river bank, with flowing lines and organic forms. The light and natural materials underscore the distinctive Scandinavian style. Equally oriented to nature, the energy management will use renewable energy sources.
Plus the traffic connections are simply fantastic. The area is located about 10 km from Lübeck's city center. Travemünde, Gemany's largest Baltic seaport, is as close. At the same time the Centre is opened, a local railway station with the highly frequently travelled regional line Travemünde - Lübeck – Hamburg will go into operation. Visitors will get off directly at the Centre in only six minutes after boarding in downtown Lübeck!
After substantial planning and much negotiation, the Centre is now starting to take shape. The building plans were approved in December 2011. Since January 16, the demolition of the old Villeroy & Boch manufacturing complex has been going on. The total investment for this project is about 120 mio. Euros.
